ISBN: 0-727-01496-X

Publisher: Rigby Publishers - 1986

Plot: This volume contains visual presentations of Australian Aboriginal myths, also known as Dreamtime Stories. These stories are traditionally performed by Aboriginal peoples within each of the language groups across Australia. All such myths variously tell significant truths within each Aboriginal group's local landscape. They effectively layer the whole of the Australian continent's topography with cultural nuance and deeper meaning, and empower selected audiences with the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of Australian Aboriginal ancestors back to time immemorial. The creator of these images, Australian painter Ainslie Roberts (1911-1993) became well-known for his visual interpretations of Aboriginal legends in his series of Dreamtime books, written in collaboration with ethnologist/anthropologist Charles Mountford. Roberts' paintings of Aboriginal myths and legends often feature a central focus - person, animal, tree, rock or celestial body - and a secondary, sometimes hidden element that casts light on the meaning of the work. His line drawings reflect the inspiration of a critical observer of life and the landscape and the technique and discipline of the commercial artist.

Publisher: Rigby Limited - 1969

Plot: This volume is a collaboration between ethnologist Charles P. Mountford and the artist Ainslie Roberts. Mountford spent many years researching the lives of the Australia's Aboriginal peoples. During that time, he collected many of the myths with which the Aborigines explain the creation of the world and all that lives and lies therein. Roberts began to see these myths in terms of color and design, and the result was the series of paintings first exhibited in 1963. This book combines, side-by-side, the written myths with the visuals of colorful paintings. This work also begins with a section that introduces general Aboriginal culture. Also available: Ainslie Roberts - The Dreamtime.

Publisher: Rigby Limited - 1969

Plot: The Dreamtime is one of the greatest Australian publishing successes. The first edition was published in 1965, and one million copies have sold in Australia alone. The original concept of the paintings was developed by an association between Ainslie Roberts and Charles Mountford, well known for his anthropological work among the Aboriginal peoples. They had made extensive tours through remote outback regions, and the resulting potent imagery bridged cultural gulfs, making Australians more aware of the Aboriginal sense of sacredness in all things. I saw my role as a white man, painting in the white man's style, and painting for white people and trying to bridge this gap between two cultures in a way that just might give back to the Aborigines some of the dignity and some of the respect that I don't think they deserved to lose in the first place.
